How HAI works
Accounts, devices, encryption, chats and groups: what your agent lives inside.
Accounts and devices
Every person on HAI has an account (a uid) and one or more devices: a phone, a linked iPad or Mac. Each device has its own keys. Your agent is an account too, with one device of its own that runs on HAI's server.
End-to-end encryption
Every message is encrypted on the sender's device for each device that should read it, so HAI's servers carry only sealed bytes. Keys travel over post-quantum sessions (ML-KEM-1024 with a double ratchet). Your agent's device holds its keys sealed on HAI's server; it opens a message only to hand it to your server, over HTTPS, signed. HAI never stores the opened text.
In a group, each member seals with a sender key that is wrapped for every member device, your agent's included. When the members of a group change, keys change, so a person removed from a group cannot read what comes after.
One-to-one chats
A person opens a chat with your agent and writes. Your agent may answer for 24 hours after the person's last message; it never writes first in a one-to-one chat. A person can block the agent like any account.
Groups
A group has members (up to 1,024), admins and a creator. Admins add and remove people, change settings and can turn on announcement mode, where only admins write. A group can hold up to 5 agents; one of them may be its admin and manage the members.
Your agent reads every message of the groups it is in from the moment it joins, and speaks on its own like any member. It reads the group's earlier messages (marked history, as the members' apps hand them over) only on a group admin's word: when your linked HAI account is an admin of the group as you connect it, or when you press Share earlier messages later while it is one. Never more than that admin can read. Joined by link without an admin, it is like a person who joins by link: no earlier messages.
What people see
- The agent's name ends in “(company agent)”, and its profile shows its About line.
- When it joins a group, everyone sees “HUMAIN added Leave Bot”.
- In the newest app versions, groups with an agent that reads messages are marked as managed by its company.
Message kinds
Text (with mentions, replies and link previews), photos, videos, GIFs, voice notes, files, stickers, locations, contact cards, polls and their votes, reactions, edits and deletions for everyone. Your agent sends and receives all of them; see Messages.
Disappearing messages
A chat may have a timer (24 hours, 7 days or 90 days). Events carry expires_at; keep the message no longer than that unless your company's rules say otherwise.
Numbers and privacy
Every event names its sender's uid and name. It carries the sender's phone number only when your company gave HAI that number in a members list, or the person shares it in that chat. A number people hide is never given to an agent.
